How do Anti-Wrinkle Injections work?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections are made from a purified natural protein that is can be administered through the skin to work on the underlying muscles of the face. Over years of smiling, laughing and showing facial expression, the muscles of your face cause wrinkles in the overlying skin. Anti-Wrinkle Injections relax the muscle contractions and allows the skin to become smooth again, regaining a more youthful appearance.

How do Dermal Fillers work?

Dermal Fillers are made from a Hyaluronic Acid-based gel, which is administered into the dermis of the skin. Dentists can literally “fill” these lines, grooves and sunken areas, restoring youthful volume to the face and brightening your overall appearance.

Can anyone have Cosmetic Injections?

Absolutely! Both men and women of ALL ages can be treated with Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers.

When should I avoid having Cosmetic Injections?

Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not use Anti-Wrinkle Injections or Dermal Fillers.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections the same as Dermal Fillers?

No, Anti-Wrinkle Injections are different from Dermal Fillers. Although they are both cosmetic injections, Anti-Wrinkle Injections work by relaxing the muscle beneath the skin. Dermal Fillers create a smooth appearance to the skin by plumping the skin with hyaluronic acid. Sometimes, a combination of Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers will be recommended.

Will I see results instantly?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections take approximately 1-2 weeks to show full effect. Dermal Fillers provide immediate results.

What products do you use?

Due to strict advertising guidelines, we are unable to use the brand names associated with these products. We only use Anti-Wrinkle and Dermal Filler products sourced and approved under the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Please contact us directly if you would like to know more detail.

How quickly will I recover?

Patients may return to normal activity immediately after the procedure. However, it is advisable to avoid intense exercise for the remainder of the day, remain upright for the following 4-6 hours, and not to massage the injected area or use active cosmeceuticals that evening. There may be some slight swelling and redness.

How long do Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers last?

Results vary from patient to patient, depending upon individual circumstances, lifestyle factors and the type of fillers used. Results are noticeable immediately, although they may take two weeks to fully settle down.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections last anywhere between three to six months, with most people waiting about four or five months in between appointments. There is no set time to wait for your next appointment. Instead, when you feel that the results have worn off, simply book in for another appointment. They generally wear off quicker at your first visit, and if you continue the treatment you often see a longer-lasting effect.

Generally, Dermal Fillers will last between 6-12 months. To maximise the results of your treatment, make sure you carefully follow the aftercare advice given by your clinician, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

How safe are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

When using Anti-Wrinkle Injections there are no direct effects at any time on the facial muscles. It is only the proteins within the nerve endings that are destroyed, but they start to rebuild immediately. It generally takes 3-6 months to build a new batch of nerve proteins to a point where the nerve regains its normal function. Muscles that are treated with continual use of Anti- Wrinkle Injections over time, will decrease in size. This is a desirable effect. It will eventually, over time, reduce the amount and the frequency of treatments needed.

Dermal Fillers have been used in cosmetic medical treatments for many years and the good news is that complications are very rare. Of course, no procedure is completely risk free, and it’s important that you are aware of any potential complications or side effects. Possible risks include unevenness, or fillers breaking down faster than desired. If this is the case after your treatment, both of these issues can be easily addressed. Other possible complications may include bruising, swelling skin rashes, infection, itching or acne like symptoms.

Should I do anything to prepare for the treatment?
A few days before the treatment most physicians will advise patients to stop consuming alcohol or taking medications or supplements that thin the blood like aspirin, ibuprofen, Gingko Biloba, or Ginseng. This will help minimise bruising after the procedure.
Are there any side effects of wrinkle relaxant injections?

Side effects from an Anti-Wrinkle Injection and Dermal Filler treatment may include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection site, all of which will resolve without intervention after a few days to a week.

Is there any post-operative care or any activities I need to avoid after having Cosmetic Injections?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers are a quick and safe procedure which has very little impact on usual activity on the day of injection. The following precautions are usually suggested:

  • No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 6 hours after treatment, including facials.
No strenuous exercise (Such as cross fit, running, swimming, yoga (positions where the body is inverted), weight training) for 24 hours. After 4 hours you may perform light exercise such as walking, upright yoga, gardening.
  • Keep upright for 4 hours — no lying on your front. Avoid activities such as shoe shopping.
  • Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol or medically necessary blood thinning medication before the treatment to prevent bruising.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment. Alcohol can thin the blood much like an aspirin, and abstaining can help prevent bruising.
  • Avoid flying after having Dermal Fillers for 24 hours.
What happens when the Anti-Wrinkle or Dermal Filler injections wear off?

Once the Anti-Wrinkle Injection wears off, your muscles will function as they did before the treatment. This means that the wrinkles you smoothed or reduced will slowly begin to appear again; no new wrinkles will have been formed due to the treatment; you will simply be witnessing old wrinkles reappearing.

Once a Dermal Filler injection gradually wears off, the skin slowly returns to its former state.

Do Dermal Fillers stretch out your skin?

No matter what you hear, a majority of the time fillers will have no kind of lasting effect on your skin.

Will I look like one of those awful ‘frozen’, ‘plastic’ people you see on TV?

At Rokeby Dental Surgery & Implant Centre, our motto is ‘Lose your wrinkles, not your character’.

The main focus of our cosmetic dentistry team is always to help you achieve the best looking YOU! The secret is personally tailored, minimal treatment- just enough to resort natural beauty without looking obvious; just enough for friends and family to comment on how wonderful you look, without every knowing just what has changed.

We have adopted the ‘less is more approach’ when it comes to prescribing Anti-Wrinkle Injections. We prefer to prescribe the amount we think you need and assess our patients as they take effect. If you need more than what we have allocated, we will be sure to top this up for you. Remember, it is easier to add little bits at a time if needed, rather than appear frozen.

Will Anti-Wrinkle Injections make your face feel numb? Will I be able to move my facial muscles in the same way?

It will not affect the nerves that cause a sensation or make you feel numb.

Do Cosmetic Injections hurt?

Most people can feel a brief sting with Anti-Wrinkle Injections. However, this pain is short-lived and made barely noticeable if we use numbing cream or ice before your injection. Careful administration and fine needle tips alleviate uncomfortable symptoms.

When injecting Dermal Fillers, a local anaesthetic is often administered to prevent any sensation being felt by the patient. The products also contain a local anaesthetic blended into the Dermal Filler material itself.

How can Cosmetic Injections help with grinding or clenching?

Muscle relaxants have traditionally been used for both therapeutic and cosmetic treatments and have been found to be highly effective and a safe way to treat TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. Over-active muscle contraction or overuse due to stress and bruxism (grinding or clenching) is a common cause of TMJ disorder.

At Rokeby Dental Surgery & Implant Centre, we can use muscle relaxant injections to treat the muscles near the jaw joints to help ease concerns like teeth grinding and clenching. The injectable temporarily blocks the nerve receptors in the muscles, which initiate movement and contractions. Contact Us for more detail.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
